The Evening Standard has learned the Government is set to use a loophole in the Gambling Act to increase the number of 24-hour betting complexes.

The controversial-move emerged after the new owners of the ill-fated Millennium Dome unveiled plans for a giant leisure complex with space for a major casino at its heart.

Before the election, Labour was forced to scale back plans for dozens of super-casinos to only one after a massive revolt.

THE head of casinos at Stanley Leisure yesterday dismissed the chances of Manchester United securing the only UK supercasino as "extremely remote".

His comments came as US gaming giant Las Vegas Sands announced it would invest £218m in its proposed venture with the football club to build near Old Trafford.

Michael Riddy, of Liverpool-based Stanley, the UK's biggest casino operator, said: "The hot favourite is Blackpool. When the (gaming) bill went through there were MPs and Lords on all sides of the house who kept on mentioning Blackpool.

Genting, Asia's biggest publicly traded casino operator, has announced plans to combine its stakes in Stanley Leisure and London Clubs International, part of a strategy to expand in Britain's gambling industry.

The move will enhance the company's "ability to leverage its investments in the U.K. and expand its leisure and hospitality related business activities"

Genting said in a statement released late Friday in Kuala Lumpur.
